Prom Dress #1: I am a woman now
SIC, VAV Gallery, Concordia, March 29-April 9, 2005
“Even as they clothe us and cover our bodies, dresses reveal so much more about who we are and the society we live in. This installation features a shapely, strapless formal dress for a high school dance, made from aging, yellowing latex condoms. A fabric corsage featuring a baby’s teething soother (nipple) in the middle is pinned to the dress displayed as a mannequin. By evoking paradoxes, and inviting playful yet serious critiques, this installation highlights and challenges cultural tensions and individual dilemmas for young women as they try to negotiate their evolving sexualities and gender identities in the age of HIV/AIDS.”
